MenorcaMenorca is the most easterly of the Balearic Islands with a total extension of 689 square km between the capes of "La Mola" and "Bajolí". The island has two totally different zones - "Tramontana" and "Migjorn"; the northern zone, due to numerous faults in the terrain is more abrupt and the most beautiful natural harbours can be found in its irregular coastline. On the other hand, the southern zone has a gentle and homogeneous landscape, with deep valleys; its coastline is more rectilinear with cliffs and long beaches. We can find in the centre of the island its highest mountain with only 357.96 m.Coastline and beaches Menorca is divided into eight townships: Maó, Ciutadella, Alaior, Ferreries, Es Mercadal, Es Castell, Sant Lluis and Es Migjorn. There are also three villages named Sant Climent, Llucmacanes and Fornells, the first two within the township of Maó and the third in Mercadal. The capital of Menorca is Maó, known since ancient times for its natural harbour. Ciutadella is the second town of the island, former capital, where one can appreciate the beauty of its streets, squares and historical palaces. Personality Menorca, either for its sea and country landscape and for its people, offers an endless number of alternatives to the visitor. But, what would Menorca be without its people? The Menorcans have their own distinctive personality, Mediterranean in every sense, open to the visitor, but at the same time, respectful and loyal to their own traditions, proof of that are their festivals, delicious food and pleasant manner to the visitor. Son Bou A turning just outside Alaior eventually leads down through a small tunnel cut into the rocky hillside. A spectacular view opens up of the resort of Son Bou and its magnificent beach, which as it stretches for about 3km, makes it the longest beach on Menorca. The sands slope gently down into clear blue waters, which on calm days offer excellent bathing and water sport facilities. The usual sun beds and umbrellas are available to hire, as well as pedaloes; while water-skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing are waiting for the more adventurous. Beach bars are on hand to satisfy any immediate refreshment requirements and there is a Red Cross centre above which flies a red flag should bathing not be safe. Son Bou offers a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shops, catering for all tastes and requirements. The more notable venues include Discoteca Son Bou, which has DJs from the UK as well as unforgettable foam parties; and also Bou Hai -the tropical Hawaiian bar where exotic fruit cocktails are served by the staff on roller-skates! At the eastern end of the resort is the headland Cap de Penyes, which is honeycombed with caves - a typical village, which would have been hollowed out of the hillside before concrete was invented. And for those interested in wildlife, the beach as it progresses further west, becomes wilder, quieter and backed by marshland - home to a thriving bird population. Situated on Menorca’s south-west coast and approximately 30 minutes drive from Mahon airport, Son Bou is a firm favourite with families. Son Bou has the longest beach in Menorca - nearly 3km of pale golden sand, making it ideal for sun worshippers and watersport enthusiasts. The sandy beach shelves gently into the sea, which is generally safe for swimming. Ocean currents, however, can be strong at times and you should look out for the red and green flags. The beach has several beach bars and a variety of watersports equipment is available to hire - jet skis, pedaloes, windsurfing boards, snorkelling equipment etc. There are a range of bars and restaurants and several supermarkets. Son Bou features one of the island’s only discos, otherwise nightlife is relatively low key - based around the restaurants, bars and a few hotels, which offer scheduled entertainment. Behind the beach, on the hill above, the large tourist development has mushroomed and the ’villa-villages’ spread westwards into the twin resort of San Jaime. San Jaime, is a purpose built resort and caters very well for family holidays. All the necessary facilities are on hand. These include tennis courts, a supermarket, shops, restaurant, medical centre and chemists. Plus the popular Club San Jaime - a water play park, with its water chutes, ideal for a break from the pool or the beach. Beside San Jaime is the resort of Torre Soli Nou. San Jaime and Torre Soli Nou, started off as two small villages, but over the last few years have grown to meet in the middle. Torre Soli Nou is a residential area but all the facilities of San Jaime are only minutes away. All in all, Son Bou and the resorts, offer an excellent beach and pool-based holiday with all the facilities necessary for an enjoyable and relaxing time.
